Unity – A Spirit of India

is not a piece of land. Any geographical area together with the people living in it cannot be termed as a Nation or Rashtra so far as the Indian definition and connotation of a nation is concerned. A nation is actually a group of people inhabiting a well defined geographical area, bonded together cohesively by a culture they share. The Indian nation fulfills all the three prerequisites despite the visible diversities that may appear to be the weaker links to those who do not understand the inherent undercurrent of cultural oneness acting as a far deeper source of bondage.

The national unity of Bharat also drives its strength from a common and shared history of external onslaughts which this country faced with a varying degree of unison for thousands of years. The Muslim or British invasion of this great nation attempted to destroy or demolish Bharat. But both these attacks of foreign origin failed to achieve their well thought out objectives of rewriting the basic structure of what we call the Indian Nation. What kept it intact was the cultural integration of highest degree and intensity. Amid all types of storms and sufferings, an unending chain of spiritual and enlightened souls continued to nurse the cultural bonds that ultimately came to flow as blood in the arteries and veins of the Rashtra-purush. We must be proud of this national heritage of ours and should proclaim with full force that we are the descendants and heirs of the oldest culture and civilization of the world.

Those who ask for historical evidences of the above said national stream of cultural unity across Bharat may be welcomed to travel down the memory lanes deep upto the Ramayan age. Is'nt the common cultural heritage of this country visible in the struggle that the scions of Ikshvaku clan of Ayodhya undertook against the demons who were more of less equivalent to modern day terrorists. People from Ayodhya to Rameshwaram fought against the anti-social elements of that age jointly and collectively.

This spirit and sacred stream of national unity could be seen flowing across the Indian subcontinent even during the invasion of Alexander when Chanakya led to the erection of strong wall of resistance under the leadership of Chandragupta. It had its epicentre in Patliputra of Modern Day Bihar and hit Alexander and his armed forces hard on the north-western frontiers of the country.

And it is more than evident that the national unity being discussed here was not limited to a joint response to and in retaliation of the external incursions. Right from the Vedic era, our Rishis, Munis and saints worked hard for evolving strategies and sutras for all round development of people born and living on this land. The State of Jammu Kashmir has been always part of it with great traditions of descendants of Lord Rama, Buddha and rulers like Ashoka and Kanishaka. The land of Jammu Kashmir has perfect blend of valor, intellect, rich culture and matchless  architect.  History  of  Jammu  region is full of valor of Dogras.         On the other hand , the oldest authentic account of history 'Rajtarnigni” was written in the Kashmir region of the State. Samrat Laliltadity constructed the “Martand temple” in the honor of Bhaskar Suryadev . It is being said that architect of the temple was at par with Konark temple built in Orrissa. Above mentioned precedents are sufficient that historically and culturally, Jammu Kashmir has been part and parcel of Bharat.
