In the early 1990s, there were a lot of killings and atrocities done to the people of Kashmir. The level of brutality was very high. The horrendous torture deaths were brought about by a resort to barbaric methods like burning alive, strangulation by steel wires, beating to death, breaking of body parts, dismemberment of body, slicing, fleecing, gouging of eye balls, branding with red-hot iron bars and many other inhumane activities. It was a huge deprivation of human rights and human dignity. The following persons belonging to the minority community of Hindus especially the Kashmiri Hindus as infidels have been tortured and killed by the methods mentioned above:

 

· October 1, 1991 - The body of a young Muslim woman who had been raped and tortured was recovered fromAhjan Road in Srinagar.

 

· October 2, 1992 - A Muslim CRPF Constable from Srinagar’s Hawal, Baba Saheb, was hailing from Hyderabad and was abducted by terrorists and tortured for two days till he died.

 

· October 3, 1992 - The body of a Muslim woman, Mrs. Hamida w/o Gulzar Ahmed abducted earlier by terrorists, was recovered from a field in Khor, Baramulla.

 

· October 3, 1992 – A young Hindu girl from Baramulla’sKhor, Deepa, was kidnapped from Batala (Punjab) by terrorists and sold to an old man after converting her to Islam. She was rescued by SF.

 

 

· October 4, 1989 -NilaKanthGanjoo was shot dead on a busy road in Maharaj Bazaar, AmiraKadal, during daytime by the JKLF assassins.Justice Ganjoo, a retired Sessions Judge in Srinagar had given a death sentence to Maqbool Bhat, the leader of Jammu & Kashmir National Liberation Front, whom he had found involved in the murder of an intelligence officer, Amar Chand, resident of Nadihal village of Baramulla district.On the basis of the evidence collected and deposed in the case, he had ordered the execution of the accused. The accused had gone in appeal against his judgment, but the death sentence was upheld even by the apex court. Ganjoo’s life was under constant threat. His house was raided and bombed several times and the government had set up a police post at his house. With the rise of militarised Islam in Kashmir, he was put to bullets and his body lay in a pool of blood. Killers had left a note on his body warning anyone against picking it up. Ganjoo was killed in cold blood because he was a Kashmiri Pandit. The twenty-two witnesses who had recorded their evidence in the case were all Muslims and they were not murdered or even hurt. Instead they were amnestyed. The Justice of the High court who had heard the appeal in the case was also a Muslim. He was not killed for upholding the decision of the Sessions Court. Abdul Gani Lone, said to be a corrupt lawyer, politician and Kashmiri separatist leader, is believed to be behind all the raids and bombing attacks on his residence in Karan Nagar.

 

· October 4, 1992 - A group of terrorists kidnapped a minor girl from Duslipora, Badgam. She was later recovered by SF.

 

· October 6, 1990 - Professor D.P. Khazanchi was killed by Islamic extremists near his residence in KaniyaKadal, Kashmir on his birthday. He was a professor of Physics, a cool, calm and soft spoken person. But as ill-luck would have it, he was lost to sanity. As he would be raving and loitering about, the Muslim killers pumped bullets into him killing him instantaneously. The militarised Muslim bigotry did not spare even an insane for the fact of his being a kafir and threat to Islam.

 

· October 6, 1990 - ZindaLalPandita from Bagatpora, Handwara was kidnapped from his residence and strangulated with steel wires in an orchard and was said to be the handiwork of JKLF murderers.

 

· October 6, 1992 - Some unknown persons had kidnapped Mrs.Zaina’s husband, Mohd. Munawar Mir, and kept him at some unknown place. The said person had two minor children with no source of livelihood.

 

· October 7, 1990–47 year old JagarNathPandita was a farmer in Bagatpora, Handwara. He was a widower living with his mother and two sons. He was kidnapped from his house and taken to the thick grooves of his own orchard where he was strangulated with steel wires. His killing took place during the intervening night of 7th and 8th October, 1990.

 

· October 9, 1991 - Mohan Lal and Ramesh Kumar were kidnapped from their village in Qazigund, Anantnag. Later their dead bodies carrying marks of severe torture were found on the road side.

 

· October 12, 1990–57 years old PushkarNathRazdan from Khonmuha, Pulwama was in his home with his wife, daughter and two sons.Some terrorists under masks barged into his house at 9 in the night and straightaway knocked him down and dragged him out. He was shot at the left side of his chest. His wife and others in the family wept and wailed, but nobody came to their rescue. Ultimately he was carried to the Army Hospital at BadamiBagh in Srinagar where he was operated upon. He failed to survive the fatal wounds even after surgery.

 

· October 14, 1990- A group of armed terrorists forced their way into the house of ShyamLalKaul and shot dead 4 family members - Dr. Shibanji, Mrs. UshaKaul, RajinderKaul and Mrs. RajinderKaul. Mrs. RajinderKaul was in an advanced stage of pregnancy. The brutal killing of the family caused an immediate reaction in the area and Muslims living in the neighbourhood exchanged hot words with the assailants. Later in the same area two more Hindus, ChuniLalandKapoor Chand were killed by the same group. Al Umar Mujahideen was responsible for the killing.

 

· October 15, 1990 - MaheshwarNathBhat from HazuriBagh, Srinagar, lived with his wife, son, and three daughters. It was exactly at 8 in the morning when three Muslim killers forcibly barged into his house and started making enquiries about his son-in-law, an officer in the Department of Forests. They were told that he had migrated to Jammu much earlier and the fact of the matter was that he had returned to join his office on promotion as ACF. During the period of enquiries his son-in-law hid himself in a bath-room which he had bolted. The frustrated killers opened a volley of fire killing MaheshwarNath on the spot, injuring his old and ailing wife who was in a state of unconsciousness, and was hospitalised at BadamiBagh where she was given treatment and shifted to Jammu under security cover. His relation was also admitted to the same hospital where he succumbed to his bullet wounds.

 

· October 16, 1992- P.P. Singh, a Sikh ASI, JKP, Incharge, Police Post, was shot dead by terrorists in Safapura, Baramulla.

 

· October 17, 1991 - A Muslim woman Haja w/o GhulamMohdButt, was shot dead during a marriage party in Qamarwari, Srinagar.

 

· October 18, 1991 – KanyaLalPeshin was a poor farmer from Pazalpora, Bandipora, who lived with his wife, daughter and sons. He was kidnapped from his house at 9 in the night. He was taken 3 kilometres away from his own village and was brutally tortured. It is said that pins were driven into his nails and more than one metre of cloth was stuffed into his mouth to stifle him to death. His dead body was found at Ajar, Bandipora. He was said to have been killed by the assassins of HizbulMujahideen.

 

· October 22, 1992 - A 12-year old girl ShalooBasanti was kidnapped by terrorists from HMT Colony in Zainakoot, Srinagar, along with her father Vijay Chand.

 

· October 30, 1990 - Mrs. InderKaur, wife of a police official, was shot dead by terrorists in Baramulla.

 

 

 

· October 31, 1989 - SheelaKoul from Dalhasanyar, Srinagar, was genial tempered house-wife looking after her family with love and affection. On the fateful day she had gone to see her brother at Shivapora, Srinagar. While returning home at dusk she was put to bullets at Habbakadalbridge. She was brought home on a hand-cart as three-wheelers suddenly stopped plying on the route. The taxi-wallahs on road refused to carry her to the hospital. Despite repeated phone calls to the SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, the ambulance failed to arrive. She was carried to the hospital on a folding bed where she was left unattended. She was shot in the chest and had a head injury. The JKLF terrorists are said to be her killers.
