The 1947 Indian Independence Act was enacted by the United Kingdom's Parliament and it partitioned British India into two new sovereign nations, India and Pakistan. The Act obtained Royal Assent on July 18, 1947, and on August 15, 1947,India and Pakistan were formed.

The Indian independence act was based upon the Mountbatten plan of 3rd June, 1947 and was passed by the British Parliament on July 5, 1947 but it obtained Royal Assent on July 18, 1947.

The enactment of the Act officially ended the British rule in India and the nation was declared as an independent and sovereign state from August 15, 1947. Under the Act, two independent dominions of India and Pakistan came into being, freeing the British government of any responsibility with respect to the governments of the two nations.

The Indian princely states were freed of the ‘British paramountcy’ under the Act, giving them the right to either join India or Pakistan or to remain independent.
