Nation pays homage to Param Vir Chakra Awardee, Major Ramaswamy Parameshwaran on his birth anniversary

Major Ramaswamy Parameshwaran, was an officer of Indian army, was born on 13 September 1946, in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He took part in a number of operations undertaken by the Indian Army and was awarded the Param Vir Chakra( India's highest military decoration), for his bravery.
He was commissioned into the 15 Mahar of the famed Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army. His unit was tasked for the Operation Pawan in 1987, which was a part of the Indian Peace Keeping force in Sri Lanka, as per the Indo-Srilankan Agreement to help tackle the LTTE terrorist in the country.
On the fateful night of 25th Nov 1987, Maj Parameswaran and his team were on their way to trace a consignment of arms at the hideout of the LTTE terrorist when they were taken by surprise. A group of heavily armed LTTE terrorist ambushed them.They had advanced weapons like the AK 47s & heavy machine guns.
But the Major Parameswaran acted in the nick of time and encircled the terrorist from behind. He charged into them, taking them by surprise. Before they had the time to react, hand-to-hand combat had already begun. But tragically, a terrorist shot him. Despite the bullet burning a hole in his chest, he did not let the pain overpower his next move. Snatching the rifle from the terrorist, the Major shot him dead. Even as he felt his own demise near, he continued to shout orders and command his soldiers.
Later on, Major Parameshwaran succumbed to his wounds but his sacrifice didn't go in vain.That night, five terrorist were killed, and three rifles and two rocket launchers were recovered.
Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest military honour in India for his valour and undaunted bravery.
