To overcome the traffic congestion in both the capital cities Jammu and Srinagar, J&K UT government had finalised and submitted a Detailed Project Reports (DPRS) of Rs 7942 crore for the metro rail project (Elevated Metrolight Rail System) to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for the approval, which include 3590 crore for Jammu and 4352 crore for Srinagar.

The Metro project for Srinagar, proposed to cover a total distance of 25 km by two lines, with 12 stations on each line, will be built with an investment of Rs 4352 crore. The service would operate for 17 hours a day in summer and 14 hours a day in winter. In Jammu, there is a proposal of covering the total distance of 23 km with 22 stations (17 km on Line-1 from Ban Talab to Greater Kailash and 6 km on Line-2 from Udheywala to Exhibition Grounds with an investment of Rs 3590 crore. Both the projects are expected to be operationalized by March 2025.

The metro rail lines will have only elevated corridors as the underground tunnels were not found feasible either in Jammu or Srinagar for a host of reasons. The coaches will be modern, lightweight and made from stainless steel and aluminium with air-conditioning and heating system.

Centre is likely to provide funds for the two infrastructure development projects which would be a boon for traders, government employees, students, security forces and common civilians and go a long way in boosting the UT’s economy.
