Naib Subedar Karnail Singh was an officer of Indian army who laid down his life in 1999’s Kargil War in the service of the nation on this day. He was in Unit-8 Sikh Regiment of the Indian army. He was awarded with ‘Vir Chakra’ (posthumously) for exceptional courage in the face of the enemy.
 
 
Naib Subedar Karnail Singh and five jawans of 8 SIKH were deployed on the reverse slope of Area Helmet in the Dras Sector during Kargil War. They came under heavy enemy fire from Tiger Hill, Charlie Feature, Rocky Knob and Trig Height at 0600 hours on 06 July 1999.
 
 
The enemy opened heavy fire from three directions and followed it up with a counter-attack with 15 intruders on the position held by Nab Subedar Singh and his men. During the ensuing firefight, he was seriously wounded. Thereafter the enemy launched a second counter-attack.
 
 
Despite being seriously wounded, he challenged the enemy and charged on them with his men inflicting heavy casualties in close combat.
 
He killed four enemy-  
 
He killed four enemy personnel and injured many more, forcing them to withdraw. He along with his men kept the enemy away till they all succumbed to their injuries.
 
 
Naib Subedar Karnail Singh displayed indomitable spirit, conspicuous courage and exceptional devotion to duty and made the supreme sacrifice defending his position.
