Goa CM Gives Citizenship to Pakistan-Born Shane Sebastian Pereira Under CAA

The Government of India has granted Indian citizenship to Shane Sebastian Pereira, who was born in Pakistan but has lived in India for most of his life. Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant handed over the citizenship certificate to Pereira and his family under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019.

Shane Pereira was born in 1981 in Pakistan, but his family moved to India just a few months later. He grew up in Goa, where he completed his schooling, and currently lives in Demello Vaddo, Anjuna, North Goa.

Sharing the news on social media, CM Sawant wrote, “Presented the Citizenship Certificate to Shri Shane Sebastian Pereira and his family under the Citizenship Amendment Act. Shri Pereira has rightfully benefited from the provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.”

The Citizenship Amendment Act, passed in 2019, allows people from certain religious minority groups who faced persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and came to India before December 31, 2014, to apply for Indian citizenship.
