Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced a major achievement in India’s railway infrastructure with the completion of the final track work on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Taking to X (formerly twitter), Vaishnaw revealed that the ballast-less track work for the 3.2 km-long Tunnel T-33, connecting Katra to Reasi, was successfully completed today at 2:00 AM.
The Tunnel T-33 is strategically located at the foothills of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Reasi district. This development brings the ambitious USBRL project one step closer to full operational readiness, promising seamless rail connectivity to Kashmir.
Describing the achievement as a “historic milestone,” the minister lauded the efforts of engineers and workers involved in this challenging project.
The much-awaited direct train from Delhi to Kashmir is expected to begin operations in January, marking a major milestone in India’s railway history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the final 17-km stretch of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) between Katra and Reasi, completing the ambitious project. Spanning 272 km through the challenging Himalayan terrain, this railway line will enable the first-ever direct train service from Delhi to Kashmir, reducing travel time to less than 13 hours for the 800-km journey.
