In a major attack, 16 Pakistani soldiers were killed and eight others injured after terrorists targeted a security check post near Afghanistan border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The attack which lasted two hours, happened in the Makeen area of South Waziristan, where around 30 terrorists stormed an army outpost during the night. Security officials said the attackers were heavily armed and launched a surprise assault.
The Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack. The group stated that it was carried out as revenge for the killing of their senior commanders.
Pakistan has been facing an increase in terrorist attacks in its western border areas since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021.
The growing attacks along the Afghan border has put a lot of pressure on Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan. Due to security concerns, Pakistan has taken strict actions, including last year’s decision to expel hundreds of thousands of undocumented Afghan residents, blaming cross-border attacks for the rising threats.
