Election 2025

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Rajiv Kumar, has confirmed that by-elections for the Nagrota and Budgam assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir will not be held alongside the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for February 5, 2025. The results for the Delhi elections are set to be announced on February 8, 2025.

The Budgam and Nagrota assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir are currently vacant due to recent developments. The Budgam seat was won by Omar Abdullah in the 2024 elections, but he also won from the Ganderbal constituency. He decided to retain Ganderbal and resigned from Budgam, leaving the seat vacant. In Nagrota, BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana, who won the seat in the 2024 elections, passed away on October 31, 2024, creating a vacancy.

The CEC stated that the decision to separate the elections was made due to harsh winter conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, which could disrupt the voting process. However, he assured that the by-elections in Jammu and Kashmir will take place before April 2025, when the weather is expected to improve.
