India has lost one of its bravest sons, Havaldar (Retd) Baldev Singh, who passed away at the age of 93 on January 6, 2025, in his hometown of Nowshera in J&K’s Rajouri district. Singh was a true patriot and war hero who spent his life serving the country, fought four wars against Pakistan and inspired others with his courage.

Born on September 27, 1931, in Naunihal village, in Nowshera, Baldev Singh’s journey of patriotism began early. At just 16, he volunteered to join the Bal Sena, a group of young boys aged 12-16, who risked their lives as messengers for the Indian Army, under the leadership of Brigadier Usman, during the 1947-48 battles of Naushera and Jhangar. Their courage caught the attention of then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who personally honoured them and encouraged them to join the Army.

Baldev Singh officially joined the Indian Army on November 14, 1950. Over the next three decades, he played a key role in several wars, including the 1962 China war and the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan. Even after retiring in 1969, his love for the nation brought him back into service during the 1971 war, where he served for additional eight months with the 11 Jat Battalion.
