Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has recommended Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as his successor. The proposal has been sent to the Law Ministry for further process.
Justice Gavai, currently the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after CJI Khanna, will take over as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14. CJI Khanna is set to retire on May 13.
President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath to Justice Gavai. His tenure as Chief Justice will last for about six months, ending with his retirement in November 2025.
