Pahalgam terror attack

In a shocking and brutal terrorist attack, five tourists were killed and several others injured on Tuesday in the Baisaran area of Pahalgam, a popular tourist spot in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district. The attackers opened fire on unarmed tourists which turned into a horrifying scene of chaos and tragedy. Security forces rushed to the area and launched a large-scale search operation to hunt down the terrorists.

According to police sources, terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists, leaving at least five feared dead and more than 15 seriously injured. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, and some are said to be in critical condition.

Soon after the firing started, local people and security forces rushed to the spot. The area has now been sealed off, and a massive search operation is on to catch those behind the attack.

Terror group TRF (The Resistant Front), an offshoot of terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility. Officials believe it was the work of terrorists trying to disrupt peace in the Valley.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the attack. He said “I strongly condemn the cowardly terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam. I assure the people that those behind this despicable attack will not go unpunished. Spoke to the DGP & Security officials. Army and J&K Police teams have rushed to the area and launched search operations”.

"Anguished by the terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. My thoughts are with the family members of the deceased. Those involved in this dastardly act of terror will not be spared, and we will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences. Briefed PM Shri @narendramodi Ji about the incident and held a meeting with the concerned officials via video conferencing. Will shortly leave for Srinagar to hold an urgent security review meeting with all the agencies," posted Home Minister Amit Shah on the brutal attack.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack. “I’m shocked beyond belief. This attack on our visitors is an abomination. The perpetrators of this attack are animals, inhuman & worthy of contempt. No words of condemnation are enough. I send my sympathies to the families of the deceased. I’ve spoken to my colleague @sakinaitoo & she has moved to the hospital to oversee arrangements for the injured. I’ll be flying back to Srinagar immediately, he said in a post on X”.

This is one of the most serious attacks targeting tourists in recent times in Kashmir. The incident has shocked the entire region, especially as the tourist season was just picking up and registration for Shri Amarnath Yatra is also going on which is scheduled to take place from July.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
